LUCK BE A LADY: ACTUALLY SENT US SOME MORE POSTCARDS FROM VEGAS—AND NEWS OF HER NEW FILM (TO BE PREMIERED ONLINE, RIGHT HERE)!

Try as she might, Actually Huizenga can’t seem to keep fantasy from devouring reality. We can hardly blame her, given she was raised in a quasi-medieval estate—a blend of faux and historic—an environment that surely breeds a belief that the real and the fictitious are never too far apart.

Premiering exclusively on VMAGAZINE.COM, Actually Huizenga poses for a pin-up portfolio by artist Socrates Mitsios, her frequent collaborator and creative partner. Framed by the fantasyland of Las Vegas, these images are a cross between cheesecake postcards and Americana tongue-in-cheek idealism. Amidst the flurry of cheap promos and raunchy advertisements that litter the Vegas streets, Mitsios’s perceptive camera captures Huizenga’s genuine desire to inhabit a world of erotic ivory tower make-believe.

Following the editorial is a trailer for Huizenga’s newest project, “Viking Angel,” a film which she wrote, directed, edited, and in which she stars. It’s a candy-coated goth-pop opera about serial murder, sexual depravity, and the occult. Sort of a latter-day rape and sacrifice-filled A Star is Born, this thirty-minute film follows Huizenga as she battles lecherous film executives, an airheaded cult, and marauding hordes of muscle-bound Vikings in her pursuit of cinematic stardom. Viking Angel, Huizenga notes, “blends ancient mythology with contemporary Los Angeles vanity,” a perverse hybrid in the keeping with the original pop-saboteur Kenneth Anger. Her film is a visual assault: a dazzling barrage of images culled from the internet, and staged scenarios, employing superimpositions of sex, gore, and heavy metal. An intentionally tacky digital aesthetic is matched by entertainingly ham-fisted performances and clumsy voice-over, a delirious cocktail that one review on DangerousMinds.net described (not inaccurately, though apparently in the attempt to insult) as “Ryan Trecartin for frat guys.” A showcase for Huizenga’s crystalline singing voice, the film stitches together “2.5 music videos” that are highlights from her newest full-length album with musical partner Chaz Windus, Touched by an Angel, coming this Summer.

Viking Angel will premiere here on VMAGAZINE.COM this month. Stayed tuned!
