THE VIDEO: RIMBAUD EYES

DUM DUM GIRLS DISSOLVE INTO A SEX-DRENCHED, DAY-GLO ANIMATED HAZE IN THE NEW TAMARYN-DIRECTED CLIP FOR “RIMBAUD EYES”

Take something deep and make it superficial. That seems to be the impetus behind “Rimbaud Eyes,” the new single from Dee Dee Welchez-fronted guitar pop heavyweights Dum Dum Girls. And really, isn’t that was pop music is all about? For all of Welchez’s obsession with 19th-century poet Arthur Rimbaud (the Dum Dums titled their crowning track off their fantastic 2012 End of Daze EP “Season in Hell” in an homage to him), much of his allure seems to be reduced to the fact that he was…well…good looking. (A teenage Leonardo DiCaprio played in in the 1995 movie Total Eclipse, after all.)

For the song’s video, directed by the polymathic musician-turned-artist-slash-director Tamaryn, Dee Dee and the gang are rendered poreless through swirling pastel layers, presented as virtual Patrick Nagel paintings rocking out in a state of hazy animation. Soon Dee Dee is walking through an X-rated Adult Entertainment emporium, before the band becomes full-tilt cartoons. The Cool World interpretation suits the song perfectly, which in itself sheds some of the moodiness and Pretenders-esque soul of past efforts in favor of a more Blondie sound and attitude. Check out the clip above. It’s pretty awesome.
