TEXT IAN MONROE
In a land of 1980s synth and grassy knolls roams Jonna Lee, aka iamamiwhoami. The obscure singer made blog headlines in 2009 by sending an unexplained knot of hair to an MTV exec and releasing several cryptic YouTube videos before revealing her identity. Ever since, listeners/viewers have been taken on an audio/visual journey of avant-garde videos and think-pieces that flow from one to the next. Where Lee is leading us is unclear, but her latest offering “hunting for pearls” appears to take place in the iconic hills and waters of Iceland. Like an angelic mermaid the singer ungulates under water only to have her crystals tangled in the net of three masked men—stolen innocence? Even if the the metaphoric possibilities are lost on you, it’s impossible to not get lost in the ethereal environment captured by the artist. The impressive portfolio and mysterious musings of iamamiwhoami makes Jonna Lee an it-girl for a new-aesthetic art world.
