The Saint Laurent Music Project isn’t normally a platform for discovering new talent, instead tending to herald established rockers and indie mavericks. The list so far goes: B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Daft Punk, Courtney Love, Marilyn Manson, Beck Hansen, Christopher Owens, and Kim Gordon—so Harding, right before the release of his first solo record is, to say the least, in good company. And deservedly. His crisp take on classic blues comes from an inarguably skilled ear and a well of musical knowledge, mixing a sound inspired by Otis Redding and Sam Cooke with the latest form of fuzz showcased by his garage-rocking and R&B singing collaborators (he’s worked with and played alongside Cee Lo Green, Night Beats and Black Lips). He’s no surf-rocker, though, even if his label, Burger Records, and his advocate, Hedi Slimane have, in recent history, lent a whole lot of their attention to the L.A.-inclined. Born in Detroit and raised on the road by a gospel-singing mother and a veteran father, Harding chose the singer-songwriter’s sacred ground of Atlanta, Georgia, to pen his first solo album, out this March. The fashion audiences will be listening.
