THE VIDEO: LADY GAGA AND TONY BENNETT – ANYTHING GOES

TEXT BREE JACKSON

LADY GAGA’S AND TONY BENNETT’S LONG-STANDING FRIENDSHIP GETS EVEN JAZZIER

Feast your ears on “Anything Goes,” a musical tour de force spawned out of the friendship between legendary Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. While it’s a fresh take on the classic Cole Porter track, the soulful duo do justice to the original. This collaborative effort is a taste of a larger jazz album, Cheek to Cheek, that will feature even more classics from the Great American Songbook like “It Don’t Mean A Thing” and “Lush Life.” The album includes jazz musicians of Bennett’s quartet and will no doubt showcase Gaga’s raw talent and ability to navigate musical genres masterfully.

Buy “Anything Goes” here.

Cheek to Cheek will be released on Columbia Records on September 23.

THE VIDEO: LANA DEL REY – ULTRAVIOLENCE

TEXT NATASHA STAGG

HOW’S A GIRL TO GET BY IN THIS ULTRAVIOLENT WORLD, ANYWAY?

July 30th, 2014. Whether you trust it or not, Lana de Rey has done well for herself based on an accute attention to positioning—and her newest video, for the title track off Ultraviolence, (knowingly?) reflects this very strategy. A genre most likely solidified as such in pornography, the “POV” video is popular because of its access-level veneer, gently and transparently breaking the fourth wall in order to provide even the most violent intentions a faux-willing subject. Like all things Lana, it’s intentionality is questionable.

“Ultraviolence” quotes other examples of complicated desire, like Carol King’s “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss),” recorded by The Crystals (and produced by ultra-violent Phil Spector) in 1962. In an outtake from last month’s Rolling Stone cover story, LDR says “Cat Power” meant (means?) a lot to her, seeing as she could relate to the singer’s stage fright. The video for “Ultraviolence,” in which LDR dresses up as a bride and leads a faceless man around a shadowy patio, whispering comforting words to his protestations, does remind of Cat Power’s video for “He War,” in which shy/not shy Chan Marshall follows a man around a shadowy beach, or the almost-“POV” video for “Manhattan.” More than that, though, Marshall’s and del Rey’s voices sound, in “He War” and in “Ultraviolence,” eerily similar, even if their lyrics—one set ultra-genuine and the other, pieced together from bits of pop-culture’s past—couldn’t differ more in tone.

The common thread here is vulnerability: a buzzword that lately gets left as explanation for just about any otherwise inexplicable rise to fame. Why do people care about the Kardashians? They put their lives on display 24/7. What gets the most follows/likes? #IWokeUpLikeThis-style selfies. When is Lana del Rey most discussed? When she says she’s “a sad girl.” Brilliantly (depending on who you ask), every time we have her pegged, del Rey turns around and tells us (while pouting, of course) we were wrong, and once again changes positions. We’re still not sure who ends up the victim of the ultraviolence, at the end of the day. For now, take her hand and watch del Rey place someone’s (the viewer’s?) fingers between her lips, while explaining what “felt like true love.” And hurry, before she changes her mind again.

THE VIDEO: KATY PERRY – THIS IS HOW WE DO

TEXT TANIA FAROUKI

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU MIX IN ICONIC FASHION MOMENTS WITH A DASH OF CULT ARCADE GAME REFERENCES? A KATY PERRY VIDEO, OF COURSE

July 31st, 2014. Leave it to Katy Perry to concoct her very own rendition of what the rest of summer should look like. Her fifth single off Prism, “This Is How We Do,” is bubbly pop at its best: A catchy chorus and an electric beat, infused with sounds that easily echo Nintendo’s prisma-colored 1990s. And Perry, true to form, can’t help but add fashion to the mix. Directed by Joel Kefali, the video features the power pop star as a kaleidoscope of characters in some of fashion’s most triumphant moments.

Opening sequence: Perry’s portrait sports the asymmetrical hair cut created by cult hair maverick Vidal Sassoon and immortalized by über 1960s model Peggy Moffitt. It goes uphill from there.

She next channels Louise Brooks with a perfect bob and super-thin eyebrows, chilling in a pearl bubble bath, and chanting her love for vintage Chanel.

It gets better: You’ll get to see the songstress wearing a rubber latex two-piece with a Mondrian pattern (hello, epic Saint Laurent reference) with two compatriots, the trio easily comparable to The Supremes; And she then finds herself behind the wheel of an imaginary sportscar, this time wearing a current version of the Saint Laurent lip dress by Hedi Slimane.

The looks keep coming: Here comes a blacklit ping-pong player, an 80s hair metal groupie, and that baby hairs-with-two buns FKA twigs look she instgrammed a while ago. Doesn’t matter which one you want her to stick with, the chameleon Katy won’t stop changing—it’s how she do.

THE VIDEO: L’AGENT BY PENELOPE CRUZ

TEXT ZOE CHODOSH

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS FALL/WINTER WHEN YOU’RE STRANDED IN A DESERT WEARING LINGERIE

August 4, 2014. Agent Provocateur’s L’Agent has released a film to accompany their upcoming F/W collection, and it’s mesmerizing. Penelope Cruz directed the short, which stars a bevy of models as a Tracy Anderson-choreographed line dance, stuck in some barren wasteland. As the video goes on, a stranded explorer makes his way into the sexy mirage, and is left (almost) empty-handed. See behind the scenes photos and the finished video above to experience a new season of cute, wearable lingerie designed by Cruz and her sister Monica for Agent Provocateur.

Christian Louboutin Launches his nail polish line

Christian Louboutin, the master of the red sole shoes is launching his line of nail polish.

Red Louboutin nail polish exclusively at Saks 5th Avenue

Red Louboutin nail polish exclusively at Saks 5th Avenue

For those who don’t know , it is thanks to the red lacquer, that incidentally the iconic red sole of Louboutin shoesappeared.

According to the legend, in 1992, Christian Louboutin, while preparing his third collection, realized that his shoes didn’t turned out as bright and interesting as they looked in the sketches. He was particularly upset by the sole. Then the designer took a bottle of red nail polish from an assistant and, ignoring her attempts to resist, transformed the shoes on the spot. And just like this thanks to a nail polish was born the famous red sole of Christian Louboutin.

It is therefore not surprising that the designer decided to be a nail polish, the product that marks his debut in the world of the beauty industry. Little bottles with sharp elongated caps similar to the high heels of his stilettos. First shade, Rouge Louboutin, goes on sale today for $50 , exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue.

A long-wearing, chip resistant formula is highly pigmented with luxe, glossy color and UV protection to keep the color true. Two coats give the effect of 20 layers of traditional lacquer, with a brilliant shine. A custom-designed, patented triangular brush ensures precise application, while shorter bristles pick up the right amount of product, preventing air bubbles and ensuring flawless coverage.

On August 6, at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Nordstrom and Sephora the same shade will be launched and on August 31 other shades will go on sale .
